A review of The Paleo Chocolate Lover’s Cookbook

I’ve been meaning to tell you about The Paleo Chocolate Lover’s Cookbook: 80 Gluten-Free Treats For Breakfast And Dessert by Kelly Brozyna. I’ve been following Kelly’s blog for several years, watching her evolution from gluten-free, dairy-free to a grain-free, paleo diet. I’ve watched her food photos go from pretty to pretty outstanding and watched her blossom as a blogger and writer.

6a00e552ad01da8834019b02199bfb970d-250wiTo Kelly, following a paleo lifestyle is about being healthy and feeling great. Kelly has celiac disease and her daughter, Ashley, is allergic to gluten and eating grains affects her behavior in unfavorable ways. “Going from gluten-free to grain-free took our well-being from pretty good to awesome,” says Kelly.

For Kelly and her daughter, “cheating with a Krispy Kreme doughnut is not an option.” Kelly has celiac disease and her daughter, Ashley, has vaccine-induced autism and is globally delayed in development.
Creating new recipes and her chocolate book was a way her family could enjoy delicious versions of classic chocolate desserts without compromising their health.

Even if you don’t have celiac disease or food allergies or intolerances, the recipes in The Paleo Chocolate Lover’s Cookbook will allow you to have your chocolate indulgences without the excess sugar and calories found in many, if not most, modern desserts, and without a trace of trans fats, refined vegetable oil, or preservatives.

Like me, Kelly uses high quality liquid stevia in combination with honey, dates, coconut palm sugar, or modest amounts of dark chocolate to reduce the total sugar load in her recipes. Compared to most desserts, hers contains far fewer sugar grams.

You’ll find so much to like about this beautiful book from the fascinating facts about chocolate to the helpful hints and from the easy to read instructions to the breathtaking beautiful photographs of the recipes. You’ll learn how to make your own dark and white chocolate bars, festive cookies, cakes, puddings, candies, frozen desserts, and drinks.

In late October, I made the Salade du Jour with Vinaigrette au Chocolate (photo right) and my 11-year old neighbor, Abby, and I made the Pistachio-Date Freezer Candies (also on the right). I made the Chocolate Pudding in November. Most of the desserts went to Abby, her mother, and some of my friends.

6a00e552ad01da8834019b0219ac3f970d-320wiI’ve flagged other recipes that would be fun to make and sample with Abby, such as Sunflower Cups (a twist on peanut butter cups), Chocolate Bilberry Fig Cookies (a take off of Cucidati, an Italian Christmas cookies I made many years ago) and No-Bake Chocolate Chip “Peanut Butter” cookies. There are other treats that would be great to make for a potluck or special occasion (birthday, holiday, etc.), such as the Chocolate Pie with Raw Graham Cracker Crust or Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake, all dairy-free and grain-free, of course. The pictures in the book look so enticing. 😉

This is a fun cookbook that you’ll want to refer to for celebrations or special weeknight treats. It would also make a great gift for the chocolate lovers in your life.
